ABOUT LIGHTWAVE SOCIAL HOUSING
The Concept of Social Housing
Social housing is a form of housing that enables low and middle-income citizens to become homeowners at affordable prices. Social housing is built and managed by the state, municipalities or non-profit organizations. Social housing is an important social policy tool for both improving people’s quality of life and reducing housing inequality. Although social housing practices vary from country to country, their common goal is to provide people with safe, healthy and comfortable living spaces. Social housing not only meets people’s need for shelter but also fosters the development of values such as neighborliness, equality and collective consciousness. This allows people to communicate with each other and show solidarity in finding solutions to common problems. Social housing is a product of an understanding that takes into account not only individual rights but also social responsibilities. The importance of social housing is becoming increasingly evident in the face of growing income inequality, urbanization problems and environmental crises. Social housing is a necessary step towards a sustainable future both architecturally and socially.
About Kapaklı
Kapaklı, which has an Organized Industrial Zone within its borders, has become a business center. The majority of Kapaklı’s population, located 5 km from Çerkezköy district and 15 km from Saray district, earns their livelihood by working in the Organized Industrial Zone. In 1970, the establishment of Çerkezköy Organized Industrial Zone was decided by the Council of Ministers, and Çerkezköy Organized Industrial Zone, which covers most of Kapaklı settlement area, became operational in 1973. With the increase in the number of factories over time, migration from surrounding districts and provinces to Kapaklı began.
Evolutionary Algorithms and Architectural Design
Evolutionary algorithms are artificial intelligence methods that mimic the natural evolutionary process. These methods can be used to solve complex and multi-criteria architectural design problems. Evolutionary algorithms develop a population through processes such as reproduction, mutation, recombination and selection to find the most optimal design solutions. The advantage of evolutionary algorithms is that they provide designers with many alternatives and allow them to define design criteria flexibly. Evolutionary algorithms can be used in architectural design in conjunction with generative systems such as L-systems, cellular automata and emergent systems. In the current project, NSGA-II (Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II) algorithm was used for optimal results.
Design Process
In designing the form of the project design and the relationship between housing units, concepts such as neighborliness, building physics and privacy were optimized using evolutionary algorithms. Revit, Dynamo and Refinery were used for this purpose. In the placement of housing units, it was important that the generated form created inner courtyards and allowed for terracing. At the end of the process, not only architectural design but also production method was a great gain.
